An all-beef patty, mango salsa, cheddar and avocado. All served on a Tater Tot bun. The Not Kidding Around Burger is the perfect burger for the kid in you, with a flavor adults will love.
I grill burgers all the time, but May is when I really get excited. In comes Burger Month, and it is on! The internet is alive with every possible burger combination that you can think of. This year is no different.
I know that when people show up on this page, one of the first things that they’ll notice about most of my recipes is the bread. And generally, it’s all about good bread, especially with my burgers. Surprise! There is no bread involved in this one! I decided to cut the bun out, and turn the side of fries into a vehicle for flavor.
Tater Tot Burger Buns – Say What?!
You read that right.
Tater Tot Buns.
This part is pretty simple. Defrost a bag of tater tots, they need to be somewhat soft. Line them up in a waffle iron, press and wait until crispy. Yeah it’s that simple. You may need to cut the squares apart after, or, maybe you just need a bigger patty.
Mango Salsa for the Win
Full disclosure, Mangos were $0.17 each last week. So I bought 8 without any consideration to what I was going to do with them. The kids love them, and my little one will chew on the seed for an hour, so I really wasn’t that worried. But I whipped up some mango salsa for tacos and realized that it would be amazing on a burger.
This is also really simple. I diced up three mangos, 1/4 of a red onion, and about 3 tablespoons of cilantro. Add the juice of one lime and stir. Thatβs it, simple, quick, delicious.
Beef, plain and simple.
The patty for the Not Kidding Around Burger is a basic no frills all beef patty. And that is perfect. Mine were nearly 8 ounces, but 6 is probably reasonable. A little salt, pepper, and you’re in business. Shape them roughly circular, and grill to your perfect burger preference.
I get pretty excited for Burger Month every year. Here are some of my previous creations.

Not Kidding Around Burger
This burger is loaded with mango salsa, and perched on a tater tot bun. We are not kidding around!
Ingredients
For the Salsa
- 3 mangos, diced
- 1/4 cup red onion, diced
- 3 tbsp cilantro, minced
- 1 tbsp lime juice
- 1/4 tsp salt
For the burgers
- 32 oz tater tots
- 1 lb ground beef
- salt & pepper
To finish
- 1 avocado
- 3 slices cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Dice mango, onion, & cilantro.
- Stir all salsa ingredients together in a glass bowl, let sit 30 minutes.
- Start your grill & Preheat your waffle iron.
- Add salt and pepper to beef and shape into three equal balls.
- Press down into patties about 1/2" thick. Set aside
- Arrange tater tots tightly together on the waffle iron, filling the entire space (you should use a little more than half a bag for a four square waffle maker).
- Press waffle maker down firmly and cook 7-10 minutes, until crispy. (I weighed mine down with a dutch oven to keep it even, otherwise one side was much higher than the other)
- Grill your burger patties to perfection.
- Arrange on tater tot waffle squares, top with salsa and sliced avocado.
- Enjoy!
