This is a fun light burger to mix things up. Think Caprese salad, on top of a burger. Simple. Clean. Delicious.

I Originally came up with this burger as part of Burger Month. It is a fun challenge to come up with original burger recipes, win prizes, and give your reader’s a chance to win a new grill. I am actually pretty excited to try my hand at it again next May, though I have no idea what route I’ll take this time.
What is Caprese?
Insalata caprese [insaˈlaːta kaˈpreːze; -eːse] is a simple Italian salad. It is typically made with freshly sliced mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil. It is seasoned with salt, olive oil, and sometimes balsamic vinegar. I decided that to play up my Italian roots, I would put all of this on top of a burger.
Just slapping the Caprese on top of a pre-frozen beef patty didn’t seem like the way to go. It seemed fitting to make the patty an Italian-American creation as well, so I looked to my mother’s meatball mix for inspiration. What I came up with was a pork/veal patty that was juicy, robust, and paired well with the subtle mozzarella and basil flavors.
This one was a backyard winner. The kids didn’t even ask for ketchup.
